Catherine Tate to be The Doctor's New Companion

The BBC have confirmed that Catherine Tate, will reprise her role as Donna and become The Doctor's companion in the fourth series of Dr Who. She will replace current actress Freema Agyeman for the first half of the series, while Freema guest stars in spin-off series Torchwood. The fourth series of Dr Who enters production this month, and is schedule to be shown on television in Spring 2008.
Freema Aygeman will join The Doctor and his new companion in the second half of the series, giving The Doctor two companions to travel with. Catherine Tate is best known as a comedian and her self-titled award-winning television sketch show named. She previously appeared as the character Donna in the Christmas 2006 special 'The Runaway Bride', in which the character found her self transported into the TARDIS and entangled in a plot to destroy the Earth on her wedding day. Catherine was previously asked if she would like to become The Doctor's companion to which she replied "I would love to, but no one has asked!" She says now that she is "delighted to be returning to Doctor Who. I had a blast last Christmas and look forward to travelling through time and space with that nice man from Gallifrey." Executive producer and writer Russel T Davies has said "Catherine was an absolute star in The Runaway Bride and we are delighted that one of Britain's greatest talents has agreed to join us for the fourth series, viewers can expect more ambitious storylines and a whole host of guest stars in 2008." It was previously reported that Kylie Minogue is to become The Doctor's temporary companion for the next Christmas special. We have already seen two companions, Billie Piper and Freema Aygeman, and two Doctor's, Christopher Eccleston and David Tenant, in the last three series' of Dr Who. The current series is the 29th series overall of Dr Who, and there have been ten Doctors during that time.
