The British public awoke to the news broken by The Sun newspaper, reporting that the couple had seen little of each other recently.

Despite the lack of being in each others company, the pair were still seen happily hugging and kissing on a skiing holiday in Switzerland a mere few weeks ago.

It’s believed that the Royal’s perseverance to become an armoured troop commander and transfer to Bovington Camp, an army camp in Dorset, contributed to the break-up whilst Miss Middleton continued her life in London, working as an accessories buyer for a fashion company.

The Sun stated that the pair had reached an ‘amicable agreement’ to part, however, the pair simply found the intense scrutiny of their relationship impossible to cope with.

The news came as a surprise to many as Miss Middleton was widely expected to become the future Queen. With her good looks, impeccable dress sense and graceful appearance, it was believed that the eldest child of middle-class entrepreneurs was favoured by many to marry the late Diana’s eldest son.

One of the couple’s ‘close friend’s’ told the tabloid: "As far as Kate is concerned, William simply hasn't been paying her enough attention.

She is stuck in London while he is living in an officer's mess. Kate feels hugely frustrated that their relationship just seems to be going backwards at a rate of knots."

The Sun’s royal correspondent Duncan Larcombe, told BBC Five Live: "My understanding, from what I've been told, is that William's feeling is he's too young to get married.

The last person on earth who's going to be pressured by newspaper columnists and television chat shows to get married is Prince William."

The 24-year-old future king had been photographed in a much more relaxed manner of late, posing for photographs with various females in a Bournemouth nightclub.

The couple’s romance developed as they shared a house as university students and from those early days, their relationship was played out in front of millions by the royalty-obsessed newspapers.

Back in 2005, Miss Middleton, 25, had her lawyers contact newspaper editors to request some privacy and earlier this month she settled a harassment complaint against the Daily Mirror over intrusive photographs published in their paper.

The complaint led to the prince appealing to the paparazzi to stop harassing his partner and newspapers duly responded refraining from publishing paparazzi shots of her.

The media had become an accessory to Miss Middleton daily lifestyle, very much like Prince William’s mother Diana. The mounting speculation over an immanent marriage proposal prompted added media presence outside her home.

Miss Middleton made a huge statement in December as she attended the prince’s graduation from Sandhurst Military Academy. This proved to be a big step for the 25-year-old as she joined the Queen and other Royals at the high profile event.

Despite the apparent split, Clarance House refrained from comment on the split and a spokesman for the Prince said: "We don't comment on Prince William's private life."
