Madeleine McCann photographed in Morocco

A photograph of a woman carrying a child with a striking resemblance to Madeleine McCann is being analysed by detectives tonight.

Specialists believe that the child in the image could be missing 4 year old Madeleine and a massive police hunt is underway in Morocco where the image was snapped by a holiday maker three weeks ago.

The image shows a small blond girl being carried in a sling over the shoulder of a dark-skinned woman, possibly of Moroccan decent.

The photograph has emerged via a Spanish woman who was holidaying in Zinat in northern Morocco.

Madeleine, four, went missing from her parents' holiday apartment in Praia Da Luz, Portugal, on May 3.

Kate and Gerry McCann’s lawyers were passed a copy of the photograph and it is understood that computer experts are to analyse it to check if it could be Madeleine.

In spite having been declared as official suspects in the disappearance of their daughter, Kate and Gerry McCann have repeatedly insisted that they feel that their daughter Madeleine could still be alive.

There have been a series of other reports of possible sightings of Madeleine in Morocco. Recently, there were two sightings of a blonde girl matching Madeleine's description in Marrakech on May 9th.

It was reported earlier that there had been a third sighting of a girl matching Madeleine's description in northern Morocco later in May.

But this is the first time that a photograph has come to light.

Clarence Mitchell, the McCann's spokesman, said: "We do not comment on any individual sightings however in this case the picture was passed to the relevant authorities as soon as it was received and Gerry and Kate are obviously keen for it to be analysed as quickly as possible."
