For the first time ever, Roger Federer was taken to 5 sets in the Centre Court and at one stage, Rafael Nadal was looking the stronger of the two players.

But midway through the match, Nadal was forced to call out the physiotherapist to bring some relief to a suspected right knee strain.

Both players were hitting baselines and sidelines with astute accuracy and Hawkeye was asked to settle the score on several occasions. But after 3 hours it was Roger Federer who was finally serving for the match on Nadal’s serve at 5-2 and with a fault at serve, Federer hit a long return and the score was again level at deuce.

Nadal netted his next attempt giving Federer his 2^nd championship point. Faulting again, Federer finally smashed home the winner to win 6-2. The crowd were on their feet and Federer stepped up to lift the Wimbledon trophy for a record matching 5^th time – equalling Bjorn Borg’s record.
