Jill Dando Killer freed

Barry George, the man convicted for the murder of television presenter Jill Dando in 1999 has been freed by the court of appeal this morning after his conviction was quashed.

Despite the prosecution contending that the residue was just one component of a “compelling circumstantial case”, Barry George’s QC said that forensic scientists claimed that the metallic residue could have been there as easily as if he was just in the neighborhood.

The jury deemed that too much weight was put onto that evidence. The CPS have asked for a retrial and that has been granted.

Barry George will have to go through the whole trial once more but it is what his sister has been campaigning for since the 26th April 1999.

George, 47, had been serving life for shooting Miss Dando dead outside her home in Fulham, west London. Jill Dando was shot on the front doorstep at very close range. She had been shopping after having finished work at 11am – she had been to buy some fish for her supper and as she arrived at her home, she was shot in the head.
