Madeleine McCann – the truth may never come to light

Madeleine McCann - missing since May 3rd 2007 – a small child, taken from her bed in an apartment in Praia Da Luz in the Algarve in Portugal.

On holiday with her mother and father and twin siblings, Madeleine had been left alone, unsupervised and vulnerable. But who could have taken her? Who would possibly have had the chance to even know she was there? Or that there would have been a window of opportunity in which to take her so that they could do with her what they wanted and not be detected? Not be detected why – because perhaps they knew that know one would ever find her body?

As harsh as it may seem, perhaps this is the inevitable truth that perhaps Kate and Gerry McCann must by now be thinking.

The few suspects that the Portuguese Police have spent some time with have included a British / Portuguese neighbor, Robert Murat,. A frequent visitor to the villa and a Portuguese / English speaking local resident, Murat had drawn the suspicion of a Sunday Mirror journalist, Lori Campbell, who informed the police that Murat was reluctant to answer specific questions about where he was at the time of Madeleine’s disappearance.

The Police also questioned a Russian computer expert by the name of Sergey Malinka. Malinka is rumored to hold convictions for child sex offences and was believed to be on good terms with Robert Murat, since Murat asked Malinka to work on Murat’s computer and set up a website for the 33 year old.The two had never really spoken that frequently in the past, but on the night of Madeleine’s disappearance, the two exchanged several phone calls. This was the reason the authorities started suspecting Malinka.

Gaynor de Jesus, who attended the same school as Rober Murat said "I do know that he has been the official translator for the police". Initially, the Portuguese Police dealt with the investigation and came under a certain amount of criticism for their lack of media information. After several weeks, the British Police also became involved and the case threw light on the different methods employed by different countries investigative techniques.

The investigation has involved both the British and Portuguese police and has highlighted the differing methodologies employed by each, with regard to such aspects as the amount of information released to the public and the legal status of those involved in the case.

In many cases, the Police can suspect someone so strongly, their demeanor, body language, alibi and such just does not add up. Could we actually be looking at a case that will just never be solved because there are no other suspects other than the ones that have already been interviewed?

In the UK alone, there are over 2,000 unsolved suspicious deaths and disappearances every year. Eventually, 80% of those cases are resigned to a file of unsolved cases and to this day the total number of unsolved cases is in millions.

Robert Murat argued that he was deeply concerned about Madeleine’s disappearance because he had recently lost custody of his own three-and-a-half year old daughter who looked like the missing girl.

The Portuguese Police investigation has taken a series of different twists and turns. Recently, a tip off from a Dutch source suggested that the body of Madeleine could be found within 4 kilometers of where the family were staying and a detailed map was sent describing exactly which lane and which precise location marked the spot of where her body lay. But the allegations turned out to be a sad hoax.

Four men were questioned at Priai Da Luz marina. The German men whose boats were moored at a local marina in Lagos 5 miles from where Madeleine went missing from. Widespread reports from people who knew the location well said that an English man who had been moored at the marina for over two years had recently fled the morring. Other witnesses said that they saw a man carrying a child fitting Maddies description on the night of her disappearance.

So, is it not now time to consider that if any one of the previously interviewed suspects is in fact the right suspect but there just isn’t enough evidence to convict. In fact, there isn’t even enough evidence to charge anyone.

At the time of the child’s disappearance, the parents were dining in a restaurant only 100 yards away. They said that one adult would return to the apartment at half hourly intervals to check on the children, but later it emerged that the window of opportunity where Madeleine was taken, was in fact more than 1 hour and when the apartment was checked, the alarm was not raised until the following morning.

Even then, the manager of the complex did little to maximise the essential time period that is so crucial in cases such as these. British Police say that in order to really make the most of investigations of this nature, than speed is very much of the essence.

One British Police superintendent who spoke about the case back in June said “If we had been investigating this case in the United Kingdom then at the very outset, as soon as the child had been discovered missing, the area would have been sealed off and statements would have been gathered from every possible source”. He added “Believe it or not, statements are the single most reliable source that secure 85% of convictions in situations like these – people trip themselves up”.

It is known that Robert Murat was not brought in for questioning until 6 days after the child had been reported missing and he was originally quizzed about his whereabouts on the night of the disappearance. His initial interview lasted for 10 minutes.

The child was taken from a ground floor apartment where the family was staying. The doors were left unlocked while the couple dined with friends at the Mark Warner Ocean Summer Club.

At 07:00am the following morning of 14th May, the apartment of Jennifer Murat ‘Casa Liliana’ was searched, no more than 100 yards away from where the girl went missing. Police and forensic teams sealed off the house, at 16:00 the pool was drained.

To date, no arrests have been made. Under Portuguese law arrests can only be made when a person has been given arguido (suspect) status officially; prior to being given this status persons are treated as witnesses only. On 15 May Robert Murat was given this status but he has not been arrested or charged. It is unclear if Murat or the Police asked for the arguido status, it is thought that Murat might have asked for the status as it gives extra rights such as the right to remain silent.

Murat has since gone to an unknown destination. Despite Murat's reluctance to make a public statement, he stated that he believed the case to have "ruined his life" and that his only way of survival would be the capture of Madeleine's captor. Murat stated that he was being made a "scapegoat" so that the Police can be seen to have found a suspect.

On 16 May 2007, reports in the local news suggested that vehicles used by the Murats were seized and searched by forensic officers. Computers were taken together with mobile phones and pagers. Video tapes were also taken from the villa and it was claimed that, on examination, several links to paedophile websites were found on the computers and that some video tapes showed depraved sexual acts and bestiality though nothing was found to directly link Murat to Madeleine's disappearance.

It also emerged that the British builder/ architect who oversaw the building of Murat’s house, flagged up the fact that Murat stipulated that he wanted an underground cellar to be built and that it must be accessed only by a hidden, secluded entrance. According to the man who built the property, this cellar was never searched.

Mr Murat, a former estate agent who lived with his mother Jenny, 71 following the break up of his marriage in England. Murat has always insisted that he was at home with his mother when Madeleine was taken on May 3 and maintains that he only learnt about her disappearance the following morning when he joined in the search.

Recently, friends of the McCann’s who were dining with them on the night that Madeleine went missing were brought together to meet with Murat at the request of the Portuguese Police. It was alleged that they witnessed a man leaving the apartment but the news only came to light several weeks into the investigation.

Police at the time said: "It is normal in Portugal for the two sides to be brought together to try and find the truth.

Fiona Payne, 34, from Leicester, and Russell O'Brien, 36, from Exeter, both doctors, and another friend, Rachael Oldfield, 36, formed part of the group

When they met with Mr Murat face to face, during an interview at a special room at the police station, in an attempt to establish whether Mr Murat could have been the man they saw, the witnesses identified Murat as the man they saw.

The three family friends left the police station after two hours. But Mr Murat was questioned for a total of six hours before leaving with his status unchanged.

The McCanns have always refused to discuss the investigation, saying only that they have been assured by police that everything is being done to find their daughter.

However, Mr McCann did clarify in a personal blog message posted on the Find Madeleine website that his friends' visited the police station. "The Portuguese police interviewed three of our friends again, to clarify points in their initial statements," he wrote.

Drugging the children?
Posted by mstar2006 on Friday 20.07.2007, 06:37 PM
I have read a few times about the McCanns giving drugs to the children. Now it states that a grandmother admitted it. Do they mention WHY these drugs were used? Sounds to me that since Murat has been in the news, all of a sudden the McCann friends remember seeing him the nite Madeleine disappeared. What is this code of silence? Have they been questioned separately? I read the McCann friends questioned Murat? That seems odd, here in The States the police or lawyer does the questioning, not friends of the victim. Already there is a problem with who was checking the children and when. We heard that the parents took turns every 1/2 hour or so, THEN the friends were also checking on them? Now i read there were 8 children traveling with the parents? Were all these children left alone? I think it is terrible that parents would leave their children alone nite after nite while eating and drinking and apparently having a good time. Did any of the parents use the babysitting service? Another odd point is I read when Mrs McCann found Madeleine missing she said...She has been taken? At that time how did she know she was not in the bathroom or something. I still dont understand why the one friend of the family(the lady they will not name) saw this man with a blonde girl in a blanket and waited weeks to report it. Where is Maddie? would of been more appropriate. We may never know what happen to her. I pray that God keeps her safe and she is found alive and well soon.
Murat car rental.

It is being widely, and incorrectly, reported that Murat rented a car on the night of Madeleine's disappearance.

He did not rent the car that night. He rented a car over a week later. A copy of the rental agreement can be found here:

I have no sympathy
Posted by Kat on Thursday 19.07.2007, 11:03 PM
Though no parent should ever have to experience the loss of a child, be it from illness or accident or abduction or the child wandering off, they left those children to their own devices against things which go bump in the night.

Moreso, no child should ever have to experience the horrors poor Madeleine may have been or may still be subjected to.

I have searched the web vigorously and with dedication bordering on obsessive in order to glean as many actual facts regarding this case as is possible. Especially in light of the limited information being shared by the PJ.

There is no more reason to consider Robert Murat a suspect than there is to consider the McCanns themselves, or someone in their group, as suspects.

For those quick to condemn him to hang, Murat is innocent until proven guilty. As are the McCanns and their group.

Normal procedures in law enforcement are thus; in the case of a child who has come to harm or is missing, the parents, or the last person to have seen the child, are typically the first suspect(s). Same thing with spouses of people who have come to harm. Having waded through numerous Portuguese news sources - and the translation thing is a bugger - they have quoted the PJ as noting that the family and friends remain under suspicion, though they have not been formally named suspects. If they were to do so I cannot imagine the backlash and caterwauling from the British press!

The description of Murat's alibi and discrepancies in his statement contained in this article are true as far as I have been able to verify.

Here are a few other bits that are not contained within this article:

There have been and continue to be conflicting reports regarding time lines given by the McCann friends.

It is of great concern and in some cases causing suspicion as to why it took weeks into the investigation for them to suddenly and collectively 'remember' seeing a man fitting Murat's description nearby the resort or the apartment the night Madeleine disappeared. Most interesting is that these collective 'memories' did not surface until after Murat was brought to the attention of the Portuguese police by the reporter named in the above article.

One of the McCann party was quoting in an interview as stating there is a 'pact of silence' among the group of friends. Odd.

Though there are conflicting reports there were as many as eight children travelling with the group. Each night of this holiday the children were left alone in the apartments while the adults dined together. The absolute certainty expressed by the McCanns, and others in their group, that none of the children couldn't possibly have roused to wander off has more than a few tongues wagging. Especially in light of the fact that a family member, one of Madeleine's grandmothers, had admitted in an interview that the McCanns had used sedation with Madeleine at previous times. Is it possible that all the good doctors in the group sedated their children so that they could enjoy their evenings out without worry of the children waking up afraid or getting themselves into trouble? Anything is possible. Nothing should be ruled out.

If the children were sedated that would explain, if Madeleine was indeed abducted, why she did not cry out and why the twins were not roused from sleep when Madeleine, who was sleeping between her two younger siblings, was removed from the bed. If the children were sedated it might then also point to other possibilities than abduction. Could she have been overmedicated? Could she have become ill in her sleep and choked on her own vomit? Anything is possible.

The McCanns, with a substantial sum of money raised from contributions by concerned and caring people who believe their contributions will be utilized to help find Madeleine, have stated in one their very first interview that they would not be employing private investigators. Why not? If not then, when the fund was new, why not now or since then? They had also stated in that same first interview that they did not physically look for Madeleine themselves. Not once. This is something which also has tongues wagging in the online forum communities. Why not? How could a mother and father not, at least in the early days, physically search for their young and helpless child?

Murat may well be under suspicion and perhaps for good enough reasons. Those reasons, however, are not good enough to convict him at this juncture. There are many good reasons, from what we know as fact, for the McCanns and their party to also have a cloud of suspicion over their heads. There are not compelling enough reasons at this juncture to declare them innocent.

I am watching with great interest to see how this ends. In the meanwhile, my heart goes out to that small, defenseless child and I will not stop wailing that not nearly enough is being done to find her.

The Russian guy, Melinka, says he has not had convictions? Has that been checked out or not? Is there any proof? The Russian guy is not even considered suspect and he is being trashed worldwide too. Oh the phone call is odd yes. Did the two really talk on the phone? Could speed dial have called Melinka's number and got voice mail when Murat tried to call his sister? None of us know at this point.

So, the media has been stuck on this info for a while and yes I understand Murat is the only official suspect so far. At the same time Murat was suspect early on and there has been no progress. Considering the amount of media coverage, police work, public awareness, reward money, etc. and a suspect early on one would think this case would have been solved. Until or unless Murat is arrested maybe a good idea to look at other people who might be involved? Is it just lazy reporting to keep rewriting the same old information over and over again? I don't think the reporter who wrote this story even had to leave his or her desk or make a phone call. It is the same o same o nothing new and no digging. I suspect some of the info included in this article may not be properly evaluated. There at least needs to be some documention of the accusations about the Russian guy convictions. That would actually be new information.

What about the inconsistencies in the McCann group? The people on holiday with the McCann's were in and out of the apartment and knew the nightly routine. What about the ring the investigative reporter claims to know? The investigative reporter claims to have witnessed illegal activity involving the Frenchman. Another place to dig? What about whether or not Mr. Chemello actually had credible information pertaining to Madeleine, whether or not he had a previous jail sentence or suspected of unrelated activity? Has Mr. Chemello been actually charged with attempted extortion? I haven't read that he has. Why not? Did he have info that could be true? Another place to dig? What about the boat that I read was docked for two years and then left about the time Madeleine disappeared? Any follow up on that earlier story? Another place to dig?

Whoever wrote this piece is right that no one will ever solve the case unless they are looking harder for new information than whoever wrote this piece.

AGE?
Posted by Lisa Sistar on Monday 16.07.2007, 01:00 PM
An observation that Robert Murat's age has been posted many times with discrepancies. Is he 33 or 53? By the looks of him I would guess 53. Not that his age matters but is does when readers want accurate information and if they can't get his age right then what else are they not getting right?

Good Grief.

You really don't get this innocent until proven guilty thing do you? Just because someone has been divorced (half the UK adult population these days), lives with his mum or looks 'a bit strange', does not mean that he is a padophile or a killer! It's whispering like this that makes justice so hard to come by, because the public is so gagging for a scapegoat to blame for a horrendous crime and for someone to "rot in hell for what he's put Madeleine and her family through". That's real tabloid justice at work! What you think, imagine, suspect or reckon about Murat is irrelevant, and none of us has any basis for making any suggestions about who is guilty whatsoever - the only people with that right are the Portuguese police, and they're working their damndest to solve the crime!
SYMPATHY?
Posted by Lisa Sistar on Monday 16.07.2007, 11:56 AM
Right Alan
I can't understand why if Murat spoke. he felt he had to say he has no sympathy for Madeleine's parents. He lost custody of his daughter which would almost make one think he took this little girl for spite. If he can't have his daughter, then these parents that left their child alone wont have theirs either.
If he has no sympathy, then he is not a man with any feeling whatsoever and has do regard for the well being of another human, which would include Madeleine.
The police said they are close to some answers so we will soon see what all the secrecy is about. Praying she is being cared for and is alive and well.

I have been trying to follow this case daily...hoping to find some good news about Madeleine.
I do have a few questions....the parents fly around to different countries and just flew with the twins to the UK for a baptism and then flew back to Portugal along with other relatives.....I was just wondering who pays for all of this? And IMO wouldnt it be smart to leave the twins with gramma in the UK instead of dragging them around and taking them to a day camp sort of place daily?
I also read about this Murat person, they let family friends question him? Cant they use dogs to search(I read that someone turned dn the use of some dogs?) There are so many unanswered questions in this case. I guess we can only hope and pray Madeleiene is alive and safe and will be found soon

I think this rouses suspicion even further. The whole of the UK wants this girl returned safely or even closure and he comes out and says I have no sympathy. Sorry but it makes my blood boil I am so angry.

Like many I believe he must have something to do with this or some knowledge of what happened. For the sake of decency be honest!

This is a hodgepodge of an "article", stolen from at least one source without proper attribution, and which tells us very little if anything more than the Wikipedia article.

Look at the timestamp on the article. 10.44am today! The author only added the reference to Wikipedia after her plagiarism was pointed out. Even so, the attribution that is there now is not sufficient under the Gnu Free Documentation Licence (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Text_of_the_GNU_Free_Documentation_License) and sections of this article are still plagiarised.

Yes, journalists use a variety of sources for articles. But they acknowledge them when they do. To fail to do so, as Karen Williams did, is plagiarism, and it is very, very serious for anyone who purports to be professional journalist. At a newspaper it will get you fired. Look what happened to the NY Times reporter who filed fake stories from Iraq, claiming they were his original work.

But what Karen Williams has done goes way beyond using various source to put together a story. She has lifted whole sections verbatim from another source. That brings her and functionpix into disrepute, and I hope the site will take action.

All those who criticise the author for 'lifting' from Wikipedia (Paul Martin, Angry Reader etc etc..) - don;t you think that all news is lifted from all sources..? There are only ever a handful of journalists that are actually sur place and who get the news first hand - but there are always millions of articles about the same subject.. All 'lifted' 'copied' 'plagiarised' and regurgetated from the same sources.. The good thing about this article is that it brings relevant information together and cuts through unneccesary journalists waffle.. And in any case, it appears that the writer does cedit Wikipedia. (paragraph 5, 7) But instead of criticising, why don;t you join up yourselves and submit some 'original' material - If you think you can can do better then the readers will vote!

As has already been pointed out, most of this article has been lifted from Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disappearance_of_Madeleine_McCann) without attributing the source. It is covered by a GNU Free Documentation License, which means that acknowledgement must be given when large amounts are copied verbatim.

I trust funtionpix will investigate and Karen Williams will apologise and add the required acknowledgement. Those who want to see the original article in its original context may follow the link above.
The basement
Posted by Penster on Sunday 15.07.2007, 04:29 AM
A really good, balanced article. I read earlier in the case that the builer/previous owner of the Murat residence alerted authorities to the existence of the basement and the reason for it being there - electrical wires I think. It was checked out and found to be clean. Like you Bernice Oxford I think Murat is def guilty of something. And I believe the Mccanns think so too. Gerry recently wrote that he and Kate cannot divulge many details for fear of prejudicing court proceedings. In my opinion, Murat was probably the scout for the abductor, via his view of the Mark Warner complex and being British and therefore able to move around easily amongst British holidaymakers and their children. It would have been like fishing in a tank for a child abductor. There is no way he physically handled her, too traceable but I believe that he knows a lot more about what happened that night, if not since. Horribly, I dont think the Mccans will ever receive closure as Madeleine would have been disposed of properly - she is too high profile to keep alive, someone eventually would be tempted with the reward money and start speaking. Theres a lot going on in this investigation that the public dont know about and I wonder at what point the police conclude the investigation and relegate to the ranks of "unsolved"? It's such a sad thing but I hope that oneday soon, some questions are answered.

Professional writer, you say? Sorry to blow your cover, but a good portion of this article, at least 50%, was copied straight from the English language version of Wikipedia.
I suggest everyone visits the main Wikipredia page and types 'Dissapearance of Madeleine McCann' on the search box and compares the two texts.
You can comfirm the Wikipedia article was written (it is still being updated at the moment), at least the parts which match the body of this article, way before Karen's was published.
The talk about Malinka was written the day it happen or on the 17th of May. I know because I spend the whole afternoon watching Sky News, bought alll newspapers the following day and wrote, along with fellow dedicated editors, that whole paragraph. The part about British/Portuguese police cooperation is also my doing.
Very strange case
Posted by mstar2006 on Sunday 15.07.2007, 03:49 AM
I find this case very odd!! First like alot of others i would like to know why parents would leave a 3 yr old in charge of 2-2 yr olds? Would Madeleine know what to do if they woke up? (was this done alot?)
The bit that really has me confused is the lady friend that was on the way to meet the McCanns for dinner, she saw a man taking a child out of a window and didnt do or say anything. She did not even report this until time went on. And if Madeleine was takin when she was on the way to meet for dinner, how were the parents checking them? She would of been gone. Very odd!!
I think there is something very wrong here. I just read for the first time about the parents drugging her?
I pray God keeps her safe and she is found alive and well soon!!
Called for a Car??
Posted by Lisa Sistar on Saturday 14.07.2007, 10:07 PM
Did you read about Murat calling for a car the night Madeleine was taken? When he has cars of his own?

Did you read about the dudes saying they had not talked to one another however the phone records show they talked that eveining or at least made a call.?

This is becoming stranger by the minute and I would suggest police track down both of these men and question them and check out that basement in Murat's home as well as the other empty houses he has access to since he is a realtor!!!!!!

Come on - let's find that little girl!!!!!!!!

True, this is a better article than most.

One point I read at an earlier date stated some former business associate of Murat decided reject the business relationship and maybe move? The person supposedly left his computers at Murat's house. It is unclear to me if the porn material was on Murat's computer or the person who supposedly left computers at his house. Murat denied in an interview having that sort of material on his computer.

Another point, I read earlier date that the Russian guy denies having been a convicted anything so that is still unclear.

If the information reported concerning the telephone calls between Murat and the Russian guy are true that is a little strange! So maybe Murat can't remember if he called the Russian which night if he calls frequently but not remembering calling him at all? If they both deny having phone conversations which are documented ding ding ding yes very suspect but if they couldn't remember talking that particular night or which night it was that is less strange. I might not remember which night I talked to someone I talk to frenquently.

Even with better reporting it is difficult to sort through leaks. Maybe a reporter can determine more about the third party of Murat who possibly left town? leaving computers at Murat's house, etc. if that info is true.

A Good Account - But There Are Many Unanswerred Questions?
Posted by Mel Nicholas on Saturday 14.07.2007, 05:25 PM
Why did Kate McCann shout out that Madeleine had been Taken when she first found out she was missing. The normal thing would be to say would be "Madeleine is missing".

It has been reported that the McCanns had previously "medicated" Madeleine because she was prone to sleep walking. Had she been medicated that night or worse still was she over medicated?

Why are the McCanns staying in Portugal? They say that they won't come back to the UK without Madeleine. Maybe they don't want to face the British press or the British police who are far more probing than thr Portuguiese.

The most important question is why did they leave Three very young children alone in an unlocked aparment while they went out to a Tapas Bar for a meal and drinks. Not the actions of caring parents!

Does anyone know if the Police have since checked out the hidden basement since it came into their knowledge? If not, why? It's just wierd how R Murat hired a car just after this had happened, especially as he had his own vehicles. Something out there happened and SOMEONE MUST know what?

I'm sorry but this man Murat makes me so angry. I have no pity for him. The only reason he offered his services as a police translator was to cover his own back in order to go back into the apartment and therefore explain away any evidence of him having been there previously. One day very soon i hope and pray he will pay for his crime. I know innocent until proven guilty and all that but come on! a 53 year old man living with his mum, never stayed in one job too long, all his associates thought he was such a nice man I'm damn sure they never really knew the man and on top of that Mr nice guy has a broken marriage. Not so nice somewhere along the line was he! He should rot in hell for what he's put Madeleine and her family through.
Thank you for this story

This is the most informative article I have read to date. Most of the articles are of the same thing over and over with no real information within.

Does anybody have any news on whether a lie detector test was offered/given??
What about the things taken from the Murat residence?

Fibers on clothes, shoes, carpets.... are they checking these things?

Why did police ignore the statement about the hidden basement in Murat's home?

Praying hard for her safe return. It's time.
