Could Madeleine McCann suspect Robert Murat be re-arrested in Portugal?
Article by Toby Serter
Wednesday 2nd January 2008, 12:05
The No.1 suspect or ‘Aguido’ in the disappearance of 4 year olf Madeleine McCann may be taken into custody in Portugal at any time following fresh evidence that the 34 year old British Ex-pat was close to the scene on the night Madeleine vanished.

The new evidence which came to light only yesterday comes from a British barrister who came forward only last week to say that he saw Murat close to the McCann’s apartment on the night of their daughters disappearance.

There are more than six witnesses who have now cast doubt on the alibi of Robert Murat and Portuguese Police took action this morning and the suspect remains in custody.

Robert Murat, has always maintained that he spent the night of May 3, 2026 at home with his mother in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz, but all six witnesses directly contradict his version of events.

Now, he is named as prime suspect following the latest accusations and Madeleine's mother, Kate McCann, is said to believe that there are "questions that need to be answered" concerning Mr Murat's movements in the hours around Madeleine's disappearance.

British expatriate, Murat, strongly denies any involvement in the disappearance of Madeleine shortly before her fourth birthday. His mother Jenny, 71, has told Portuguese police that her son was with her all night.

But it has emerged that the British barrister who gave a statement to officers told them he saw Mr Murat on a street corner opposite the McCanns' Ocean Club apartment 30 minutes after Madeleine was reported missing.

The barrister shared a drink with Mr Murat the following evening, together with Jayne Jensen, a British holidaymaker. He described Mr Murat's behaviour as "odd", saying he went to change his clothes because it had been a long day, even though the barrister was sure Mr Murat had changed his clothes earlier. Mrs Jensen, a 54-year-old businesswoman, has told police she saw Mr Murat smoking a cigarette on the street corner at the time he was seen by the barrister.

Charlotte Pennington, a nanny working at the Ocean Club resort, also claims to have seen Mr Murat in the hours after Madeleine vanished.

The other three witnesses who say they saw him that night are all members of the McCanns' holiday group, who are understood to have told police that Mr Murat introduced himself to them on the night of May 3. According to Fiona Payne, Rachael Oldfield and Russell O'Brien, Mr Murat said: "I am Robert. Can I help in the search?"

Mrs Jensen contacted police in Portugal within hours of Madeleine's disappearance, but it was not until six weeks ago that police officers from Leicestershire took a formal statement from her, which has now been passed on to Portuguese police.

Last month, Jenny Murat said anyone who claimed to have seen her son on the night of May 3 was a liar.

Mrs McCann and her husband Gerry, of Rothley, Leics, also remain official suspects in the case. They deny any involvement in their daughter's disappearance.

There is not one shred of evidence to convict Muriat he is being used as a scapeboat - but there is plenty of circumstantial evidence found in the flat and in the hire car. There is no evidence to support an abuction. The Tapas 9 were drunk and none of their statements add up. Any idiot would know that this is a major cover up. Mrs & Mrs McCann have so far evaded a public enquiry. I would like to know why? It's amazing what one can get away with when protected by the BMA and if you have connections that permit you to be unaccountable. People have been convicted on less. Sniffer dogs smelt corpse. Are we being told that only in certain cases we believe that the police dogs are 120% correct and that a different sent of rules applies to this case.

i have been following this story for a long time. i can't believe the deception, false testimonies, confusion. i'll be honest i did not suspect the parents at first, my heart goes out to them especially to madeleine. the more i hear, the more it sounds like the mccanns are in question. look at the evidence, its pretty hard to fake that with a sniffer dog. i have to admit that Robert, although made a suspect has composed himself with dignity. i am overwhelmed by all these witnesses all of a sudden, were they sleeping in may come on!! i believe that the truth will always rise to the top, it may take time, but truth always win at the end. an innocent person doesn't need to yell and proclaim to the world they are innocent. it looks like the pieces of the puzzle are coming together slowly, no matter how much media hype there is. being a false witness is not a light thing, that is putting someone else's life in danger, how sad. if robert murat is innocent, it certainly is starting to look that way, THE TRUTH WILL DEFEND HIM.\\

good luck

I have followed all of this as closely as I can, and find it hard to believe some of the remarks posted here.
Robert was questioned and made and arguido, that's a fact, he has not been arrested, that's another fact, so get over it.
He has been had an experience that no one can imagine since being made and arguido, as have all his family and friends, can any of you imagine what it must be like for them all to be under such a cloud. I know he has had death threats, and the family have been treated with suspicion too. They are a lovely family always helpful and kind to people, now they have gone from being a respected family to one who have to try to protect Robert and themselves from all the innuendos cast by the press and TV.
These so called witnesses that keep crawling out of the woodwork, well they could just be mistaken, have any of you noticed the similarity between David Payne and Robert, when you consider that it was dark when they claim to have seen him, it would be easy to make that mistake.

Meanwhile poor Madeline is still missing.
Tuck, please give my love to Robert, Jenny, Sally, Ralf and keep some for yourself.
Anorak was right, witnesses are DECREASING?
Posted by KB on Saturday 5.01.2008, 08:25 PM
Yesterday an Anorak satire story was making fun of the fact that all the news companies are getting the number wrong for witnesses blasting Murat's alibi.
The Sun says it is the ninth witness (CORRECT)
The Daily Express says the eighth
Still the Daily Mail says the seventh
and now functionpix or whatever this is says it's six
hahaha
things seem to be getting better for Murat.
Although I wouldn't consider this site a reliable source.
Keep looking for Madeleine!

You are obviously a very poorly informed journalist. Unfortunately those are the most dangerous.

Tuck Price is not Robert Murat. He is a real person that on more than one ocassion has defended his friend on television.
Furthermore, you state - erroneously - in your article that R. Murat is the ONLY suspect in 8 months. I regret to inform you that once again, you are incorrect. In early September, two other arguidos were named. They are both related to poor little Madeleine McCann - they are her parents: Kate and Gerry McCann and the police are very much interested in inconsistencies and statements that do not add up.

Nevertheless, this is neither the place nor are we privy to information to accuse anyone. I am merely stating a FACT which you, as a "journalist" should know. THREE arguidos - not one!

Mr Serter, your article is obviously very biased against one of these arguidos. You do not give us any logical reasons for this. In no way does your article help find Madeleine or figure out what happened to her. It is simply and utterly very poor journalism, like we are becoming use to seeing in this case. Do you and some of your collegues actually think that by "forgetting" certain facts you can re-write the history of this case and fool the public into believing what you want them to believe? Perhaps this was possible in the past, but with the internet, I inform you know, this will not happen. Too many of us read papers in various languages, throughout the world. We do not get suckered in by spin.
Tuck Price - you are Murat!
Posted by Toby Serter on Thursday 3.01.2008, 08:03 PM
Why defend Robert Murat with such vigor? You urge me to 'rest in peace' - wishing I was dead is surely a little excessive?

Robert Murat is clearly a suspect - in fact he is the ONLY suspect after more than 8 months of searching for missing Madeleine - I find it slightly odd
that you are so convinced to the contrary - after all, he was named official 'Arguido' and has been arrested and held in custody suspected of
having involvement in the case of missing Madeleine McCann since 15th May - less than two weeks after her disappearance. This status has not changed to this day.

Chief Inspector of Portuguese Police, Olegário de Sousa told a news conference that a man (believed to be Murat) had been interrogated, but not enough evidence was found to arresting him.
They also searched five houses and seized various materials from the properties which were being subjected to scientific tests.

Murat claimed that he was being made a scapegoat - but to this day, he remains the only man suspected of Madeleine's disappearance.

On 16 May that two cars used by the Murats had been examined, and computers, mobile phones and several video tapes were taken from their villa. It also emerged that a British architect who built the villa was ignored when he called police about a hidden basement within the property.

I am clearly not the only one that has questions about Mr Murat - perhaps you should remember that before you condemn the messenger.

- if you're so certain that he is innocent, then why have YOU not been called in
to give evidence? What is it that YOU know that the Portuguese Police don't?

Mr Price - I amended my story, not because it was wrong, but because it is not public. Mr Murat and his
alibi's are under intense and scrupulous questioning. I am clearly not the only one in the world who has his doubts - perhaps you could explain why
you are so vehemently confident about his innocence?

I am a professional journalist and I make absolutely certain of my information prior to publishing it here and on other news sites around the world.

My credentials are available for your examination if you would like to check them - are you as willing to attend a meeting? I would be more than happy
to arrange an interview should you so wish
and perhaps you could persuade your good friend Mr Murat to come along as well and he could clear up all these questions himself!

Yours Sincerely,

Toby Serter.

I first wrote on this blog trying to clear up the truth from the lies. In a naive way I thought I could help people distinguish the truth for these lies and in a small way I did. Toby Serter changed his story.
I have now realized that this is only benefiting Toby Serter and his fantasies of becoming a writer.
For all of you out there in support of Robert, I thank you! He and all his family have had an incredibly difficult time. They have handled themselves with dignity and integrity through out this whole ordeal.
For the rest, I feel sorry for you. You are judging a man and his family whom you don´t know. You obviously care about the disappearance of Madeline but are willing to condemn an innocent man because of what you read in the papers instead of keeping an open mind to find the truth. If there was a shred of evidence against my friend Robert he would not be a free man.
If you would like to pass on your comments to the Murat family please write to my personal email, tuckprice@yahoo.com. Remember, anything negative will be passed straight to the police. Think before you speak!

Please tell me how I can express support for Robert. I am appalled at the way he is being treated, especially by the British press.

I did write once to what I thought was his ex wife's address in Hockering, but I did not get a reply. I just want him to know that not everyone in UK has condemned him unheard.

The vilification of an obviously innocent man, the constant picking over his alibi to undermine it and the "witnesses" belatedly crawling out of the woodwork claiming to have seen him near the crime scene on 3 May 2026 really get under my skin. Although I have never met Robert and probably never will, I feel deeply for him and I would like him to know it.

I don't know where you get your information but you are completely off the mark.
1.Robert has never changed his story to the police, ever!
2.Reports are coming out that Methodo 3 have been recorded paying off the witnesses in question.
3.The night Madeline went missing there were many locals from the village trying to help the McCans. A lot of these people have known Robert since he was a child. They have all been questioned by the police and confirmed he was not out that night.
4.Jenny Murat is not a liar!
5.Reread the article above. It has been changed since last night because Toby Serter has no idea what he is talking about. Throw in these crazy witnesses statements and BANG, you have headlines. This type of journalism is not helping find Madeline.
I am not trying to convince you of Roberts innocence, I know he is innocent. I am just letting you know most of your facts are not right.
Sincerely,
Tuck Price

Dear Tuck price

with all due respect mr murat has 9 witnesses who all claim that he was around the apartment which the maccanns stayed in on that fatefull night of may 3rd 2007.Only his mother says he was at home with her?

for the record mr murat as i understand it changed his story to the police on two occasions before this.

at the very least mr murat and his mother should be re intervewed further!i can not see why 9 tottally diffrent people would come forward and say he was there when he was not.i also can fully understand why mrs murat tried to cover for her son.i do not beleve 9 people can be mistaken with his i.d

mr.murat has indeed told one lie on top of another and it is clear he was not at home, maybe if he told the police where he really was he would not be tied up in this.

Thank you for passing on my comments.
He has more support than he knows. We are just not sure how to express it and those who believe he has been a scapegoat in this ordeal do not have the media backing that others do. I considered writing him a letter and know that others have also, but I assume he would be wary of opening mail from complete strangers at this stage. I know I would.
So I, like others, limit ourselves to posting comments in his support on forums and sites such as this one.
You are right about the character assassination and downright inventions as to events that never took place. This is a very trying time for him, but he does have support. Tell him to hang in there. In the end, the truth always comes out and I am sure he will be cleared.

Dear Isabella,
Thank you for your comments concerning Robert. There has been very little support for Robert during what I can only describe as one of the worst character assassinations. Those that know him and love him have been very supportive during this ordeal.
All the nonsense that is being printed in the newspapers and by Toby Serter are not helping find Madeline. At the end of the day Madeline is still missing. Lets hope that the new year will bring honest reporting and a positive outcome in the search for Madeline
I will pass on your kind thoughts to Robert and his family.

Please let Robert Murat and his family know that he has alot more supporters than you would first think by reading the press. The news is clearly biased towards the McCanns. Nevertheless, many of us do not buy into the media spin. Robert has(unlike the other 2 arguidos) handled himself with dignity and respect for the laws of Portugal. He has my support and of many of my countrymen that are becoming more and more convinced that he was but a scapegoat in this awful case. Please wish them the best. We are carefully watching so that justice is done. No scapegoats in Portugal. Robert Murat has been through enough. And I hope in the end he holds all those that bore false testimony against him accountable before the law.

I am not at liberty to reveal my sources of information but can assure everyone here that I act upon information obtained directly from the sources connected with the case in Praia Da Luz in Portugal. Unlike some other tabloid journalists, I only report on stories that I know are real and that I am confident of. If the news concerning Murat's arrest has not yet been made public, then you only have to wait and see.

Perhaps Mr Serter would care to confirm the previous two dates on which Mr Murat was taken into custody, I think he may struggle. Perhaps Mr Serter would care to give details of the dates om which Mr Murat was previously arrested, again he'll struggle.

Perhaps naming this mysterious barrister might lend some credibility to the story.

Rather strange isn't it, the way that several hundred locals who actually know Mr Murat did not report seeing him, and yet, a number of people all connected to the McCann family (who for the record are also suspects in this case), and who don't know Mr Murat, where able to identify him, in the dark.

Hmmmm ......
