Martin ‘The Wolf’ Adams has won The World Darts final at the Lakeside Country Club in Frimley, Surrey in a scintillatingly close final which saw the 150 – 1 outsider Phil Nixon recover from 6 – 0 down to force a playoff in the final set.

Adams looked as though he was going to white wash his opponent as he comfortably gained a 6 – 0 advantage. Nixon was always on the back foot it seemed and failed to find his form.

However, Nixon fought back and slowly began to regain his composure, winning the 7the set. However at 6 – 1 Adams was still looking unstoppable and the prospect for any player to come back from such a huge deficit was still looking impossible.

Phil Nixon continued his fight by winning the 8^th, 9^th, 10^th and 11^th sets to bring the scores level at 6 sets each. Suddenly the World title was hanging in the balance as the outsider threatened Adams with every dart.

House husband Phil Nixon from Durham in the North East of England is the oldest player in the tournament and only won a place after qualifying after 20 years of trying.

Eventually however it was the world No.1 Martin Adams who finally came through winning the set by 3 legs to one with his favourite double 20.

Adams pockets a cheque for £70,000 and later he commented on his win by saying “I’ve been chasing this for 14 years. Throughout the game I could feel my arms tightening up and I felt it was slipping away from me” he went on “just play the game I thought and when I won first 6 sets I thought it was in the bag” – “When I then lost the next 6 I thought it was rubbish weren’t it”. “I thought no surely not – 6 – 0 up and lose it – surely not. The opportunity came along in the end though”
