Other social networking sites like Bebo and Facebook are increasing their share however but the closest is still almost 6 million visits per month down on Mayspace with almost 4million unique visits per month.

The most popular page on MySpace UK is for Aids charity Project RED, with more than 627,000 "friends". The number two most visited page is that of Damon Albarn’s made up band ‘Gorillaz’

Myspace became popular for offering an interactive, user-submitted network of friends, personal profiles, blogs, groups, photos, music and videos internationally. It quickly became extremely popular with musicians and amateur pop groups who found a way to collect a fan-base without being signed to a music agent or record company.

The headquartered are located in Beverly Hills California, where it shares an office building with its immediate owner, Fox Interactive Media; in turn, the owner of Fox Interactive (and therefore MySpace), News Corporation is headquartered in New York City.

MySpace launched the UK site in April 2006 and since then traffic figures have almost tripled in the number of users who visit the site each month.

According to Alexa, the internet’s world site positioning website, they say that Myspace is currently the world’s 6^th most popular site and has sometimes occupied the number one position. “Positions are changing all the time” said an Alexa specialist, “Sometimes a website will have an objective to try and raise their traffic and it’ll jump a hundred thousand positions over night – things move much quicker on the internet and there are over 8billion sites and growing”.

MySpace say that figures show that there are more than 1.8m users in London and more than 721,000 in Manchester and 589,000 in Birmingham.

The service has gradually gained more popularity than similar websites to achieve nearly 80% of visits to online social networking websites. It has become an increasingly influential part of contemporary popular culture, especially in English speaking countries.

There are over 300 staff involved in the Myspace phoenomenon and it does not disclose revenues or profits separately from News Corporation. With the 100 millionth account being created on August 9, 2006, in Holland and a news story claiming 106 million accounts on September 8, 2025 the site reportedly attracts new registrations at a rate of 230,000 per day.
